Origins of the Veeravanallur Mat Tradition
The mat-weaving practice in Tirunelveli developed in response to the region’s warm and humid climate, where breathable natural fibres offered relief from heat. Communities living along riverbanks and wetlands had access to reeds and grasses that could be harvested, processed, and woven into durable household products.
Over time, this practical craft evolved into a specialised occupation for certain artisan families. Knowledge of selecting the right reeds, cutting them at the correct stage of maturity, and preparing them for weaving became part of inherited skill systems passed down through generations.
Raw Materials and Preparation
After harvesting, the reeds are sun-dried, split into thin, uniform strips using hand tools; then smoothed and graded based on thickness and quality. Some strips are left in their natural pale tones, while others are dyed using traditional or modern colourants to create simple stripes or borders. The dyeing process is carefully done so the fibres retain flexibility without becoming brittle.
Weave Structure
The mat is built on traditional floor looms by interlacing reed strips as weft through a supporting warp, often made from cotton or other strong thread. The reeds are pressed tightly together to create a smooth, compact surface that is comfortable to sit or lie on. Water is sometimes sprinkled lightly during weaving to keep the fibres supple and easier to handle. The edges are finished neatly with thread binding to prevent fraying and ensure longevity.
A well-woven Nirvallu mat has a cool, firm surface that becomes smoother with use. The tight weave contributes to durability while maintaining flexibility, allowing the mat to be rolled and stored easily.
Continuity and Changing Markets
Today, Nirvallu mat weavers are adapting their craft to contemporary markets by producing table runners and placemats, decorative wall panels, custom-sized mats for urban homes etc. These innovations help expand income opportunities while preserving the core weaving techniques.
